RAPID COMMUNICATION Species-Diagnostic Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism and Sequence-Tagged Site Markers for the Parasitic Wasp Genus Nasonia (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae)

چکیده
Wasps of the genus Nasonia are important biological control agents of house ßies and related Þlth ßies, which are major vectors of human pathogens. Species of Nasonia (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) are not easily differentiated from one another by morphological characters, and molecular markers for their reliable identiÞcation have been missing so far. Here, we report eight single-nucleotide polymorphism and three sequence-tagged site markers derived from expressed sequenced tag libraries for the two closely related and regionally sympatric species N. giraulti and N. vitripennis. We studied variation of these markers in natural populations of the two species, and wemapped them in theNasonia genome. The markers are species-diagnostic and evenly spread over all Þve chromosomes. They are ideal for rapid species identiÞcation and hybrid recognition, and they can be used to map economically relevant quantitative trait loci in the Nasonia genome.

متن کاملPhylogeny of cytoplasmic incompatibility micro-organisms in the parasitoid wasp genus Nasonia (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) based on 16S ribosomal DNA sequences.
Cytoplasmic incompatibility results in embryo mortality in diploids, or all male offspring in haplodiploids, when individuals carrying different cytoplasmic factors are crossed. Cytoplasmic factors have been identified as intracellular micro-organisms. Microbe-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility is found in many insect taxa and may play a role in reproductive isolation between populations. Such...
متن کاملRecombination and Its Impact on the Genome of the Haplodiploid Parasitoid Wasp Nasonia
Homologous meiotic recombination occurs in most sexually reproducing organisms, yet its evolutionary advantages are elusive. Previous research explored recombination in the honeybee, a eusocial hymenopteran with an exceptionally high genome-wide recombination rate. A comparable study in a non-social member of the Hymenoptera that would disentangle the impact of sociality from Hymenoptera-specif...
متن کاملOligonucleotide Primers for Targeted Amplification of Single-Copy Nuclear Genes in Apocritan Hymenoptera
BACKGROUND Published nucleotide sequence data from the mega-diverse insect order Hymenoptera (sawflies, bees, wasps, and ants) are taxonomically scattered and still inadequate for reconstructing a well-supported phylogenetic tree for the order. The analysis of comprehensive multiple gene data sets obtained via targeted PCR could provide a cost-effective solution to this problem. However, oligon...
متن کاملLarval Diapause of Maternal Origin: Induction of Diapause in Nasonia Vitripennis (walk.) (hymenoptera: Pteromalidae)
Factors which induce diapause in insects are, in most cases, only effective when applied to the individuals which are destined to cease development (Lees, 1955), although in many examples—for instance the vine leafroller, Polychrosis botrana (Komarova, 1949)—the sensitive stage and the resulting diapause are separated by several intervening instars. However, there are a few insects known in whi...
